MY FIRST WEEK AT DESIGN 101

My name is Joseph Burutu, A recent graduate from the University of Benin, Nigeria; B.Sc. in Biochemistry. I’m a front end web developer, although I still have a long way to go.

So my journey began the day I registered for the course. Actually didn’t even plan for such, but a friend registered and indicated on Instagram, so I thought, “why not”, it would be cool to have such on my CV.

So upon registration, I got my welcome and subsequently invite link. I was added to this group of totally amazing persons. Although I’m yet to know them all, but they must have been enthusiastic about Tech & great design to have joined.

Upon joining, I got access to great resources such as design tools, podcasts, articles and videos. I would confess that I was blown away by some of the tools, but I’ll keep the names to myself, if you want to know, join us (*winks).

Next, we had our first exercise which was to examine some sites, and determine which ones we liked, and the ones we didn’t based on the ten qualities of good design. And we used one of the tools, Figma (you got me). It was definitely fun, as I got to know how to use the tool to an extent.

Next was the quiz 1, which is what you’re reading now, and it was to explain my first week.

WHAT I LEARNT AND HAVE CREATED

Well I certainly got exposed to a lot, I’m not done with the resource materials, but I’m definitely going to read them all. But, I majorly learnt to appreciate the beauty in anything thing I create. “DESIGN IS A STATE OF MIND”, these words stick to me like glue and have since, influenced the decisions I make as a web developer.

I’m currently working on a project and this course is definitely a big influence on the templates I use and on the content of the site. Can’t expressly state the site now, for some reasons.

CONCLUSION

I just want to conclude by saying, design is absolutely a must for everyone to know. We all need to learn to recognize good design, not just as programmers but as individuals during our normal activities. Good design is the future. Thanks (With a large smile).
